Process Flowchart

Type steps, get a flowchart.

When to use it

Use it to map a process quickly. Type one step per line, mark starts, ends and decisions, and it draws a clean flowchart.

What you enter

  • One step per line

Start a line with ( for start or end, ? for a decision. Anything else is a process step. Example: (Order received, ?In stock, Pick and pack.

What you get

  • Flowchart

How it works

Decisions are drawn as diamonds in sequence. Add the Yes and No branch text into the step wording, for example "?In stock? Yes: continue, No: backorder".

How to use the Process Flowchart

A process flowchart shows each step and decision in a process in order, using standard symbols.

  1. Agree the start and end points.
  2. Add each step (rectangle) and decision (diamond) as it really happens, not as it should.
  3. Mark delays, rework loops and hand-offs, which are where improvement usually lies.

Worked example

Mapping 'Purchase request to PO' shows three approval loops and two re-keying steps. Combining approvals under $1,000 into one and entering requests directly into the purchasing system cuts the average cycle from 4 days to 1.
