How it works

Red tag anything with no clear use in the area. Give owners a fixed period, such as two weeks, to decide. Untagged items nobody claims go to the agreed disposal route.

How to use the Red Tag Log

Red tagging is the Sort step of 5S. Anything not needed for current work gets a red tag and moves to a holding area until someone decides to keep, relocate, sell or scrap it.

  1. Tag each questionable item and record it in the log with location and reason.
  2. Set a decide-by date, usually 2 to 4 weeks.
  3. Review the log on that date and record the final decision.

Worked example

A red-tag event in a machining cell tags 58 items, including 11 obsolete fixtures and 9 drums of unused coolant. After the review, 41 items are removed and two pallet spaces are freed for work in progress.
