Takt Time Calculator

Takt, cycle time check and operators needed.

When to use it

Use it to set the pace of a line from customer demand. It works out takt from available time and daily demand, checks each step's cycle time against it, and tells you how many operators the work content needs.

What you enter

  • Shifts per day
  • Shift length (min)
  • Breaks per shift (min)
  • Demand per day (units)
  • One process step per line: step, cycle time (seconds)

Paste two columns from Excel.

What you get

  • Cycle time against takt
  • Step detail

How it works

Takt = net available time per day ÷ customer demand. Capacity per day = net available time ÷ slowest cycle time. Operators needed = total cycle time ÷ takt, rounded up.

How to use the Takt Time Calculator

Takt time is the pace of customer demand: how often one unit must be finished to meet orders exactly.

Takt time = net available working time ÷ customer demand for the same period.

  1. Enter shift length, then subtract planned breaks, meetings and planned maintenance.
  2. Enter customer demand for the same period.
  3. Compare takt time with the cycle time of each station: any station slower than takt is a bottleneck.

Worked example

One 8-hour shift (28,800 s) with two 15-minute breaks and a 10-minute start-up meeting leaves 25,800 s. Demand is 430 units per shift. Takt time = 25,800 ÷ 430 = 60 seconds. A station with a 72-second cycle time cannot keep up and needs balancing or a second operator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the takt time formula?

Takt time = net available time per period ÷ customer demand per period. Keep both numbers in the same period, such as one shift or one day.

Is takt time the same as cycle time?

No. Takt time is set by the customer. Cycle time is how long the process actually takes. The goal is cycle time slightly below takt time.

What if cycle time is higher than takt time?

You will miss demand. Rebalance work between stations, remove waste from the slow station, add capacity or add overtime.
